abstract = "This work had as objective quantify and qualify the land use
conflicts in permanent preservation areas (PPA) using thematic
images from a High Resolution Camera (HRC) sensor, resolution of
2,7 m. The study area is located in the Rio Pardo watershed area,
Botucatu, SP. The whole confection of the permanent preservation
area limit was based on the Brazilian Forest Code and the CONAMA
N° 303 (2002)s resolution that were created in order to protect
soil, biodiversity, water and other elements around the river. The
results were obtained by an overlay combining the land use map
with the drainage network map using GIS. Eight different land uses
were mapped including native vegetation, urban areas, sugar cane,
pasture, planted forest, riparian zones, annual cultures and bras.
The results of mapping the land use conflicts in PPA showed that
834,62ha, which is equivalent to 66,53% of the total area, was
classified as bras, little weeds and brushwood that are usually
cut off , burned or just abandoned. The class pasture was found in
31,96% of the total area of the Rio Pardo watershed area and in
11,68% of the PPA. The geotechnologies helped to identify, in our
study area, what has been modified in the land use of the PPA,
giving us support to sustainable managements and the
                         re-establishment of the native vegetation.",
